Community-based research for the conservation and sensible use of natural aquatic breed resource in Thuan, an opening of the Tam Giang Lagoon, Thua Thien Hue Province

Objectives

  • To inventory the species richness, aquatic resources, ecological conditions and their changes.
  • To identify the species migrating into the lagoon.
  • To determine the variation of species and the number of economically valuable species.
  • To determine the environmental conditions, utilization status, development activities and threats to the biodiversity in the lagoon.

Activities

  • Selection of study sites (main tide streams).
  • Sampling and collection of specimens.
  • Select fishermen who will cooperate in the project using participatory research method.
  • Conduct interviews to obtain local ideas.
  • Test management strategies proposed by fishermen.

Expected Outcomes

  • Aquatic fingerlings in Tam Giang lagoon are conserved during its migration from the sea into the lagoon by protecting its habitat from any destruction or over-exploitation.

ARCBC Remarks

  • Study should be linked to economic studies and also to freshwater fish studies. Many of the freshwater fish in C. Vietnam breed in these lagoons.
