Maintenance of biodiversity: Conservation of cultural practices
Objectives
To build temporary and long-term strategies to protect and develop the biodiversity conservation based on the cultural practices of the local community.
Research Theme
Taxonomy and Systematics
Activities
Meetings
Reconnaissance survey and data collection
Local interviews and land use
Plant collection (biological and ethnological aspects)
Plant identification
Data analysis
Expected Outcomes
Develop Thai and Vietnamese competence on the topic through the pioneering approach of this joint research.
Tools for measuring sustainability of harvesting/extraction strategies will be tested, developed and proposed.
Publications both at the local level and international journals.
Support will be given to local populations for understanding sound vs. unsustainable methods of harvesting.
The project can build on the close association already established both with the international network of researchers.
Biological diversity estimates and NTFP determinations will contribute to the documenting of flora and fauna of the region.
The comparative dimension will bring out differences in the way people interact with their forest environment and show complexities involved in making sweeping generalizations about NTFP or biodiversity use.
