Marine biodiversity loss in Spermonde Islands, Southwestern Sulawesi, Indonesia: Assessing capacity and impacts of destructive fishing practices
Objectives
- To study will review the current reef condition, fish diversity and destructive fishing practices occurring in the Spemonde Islands.
- To explore any opportunity to develop an alternative fishing strategy that is environmentally friendly but economically viable.
Research Theme
- Ecological Reconstruction
Activities
- Site selection
- Conduct preliminary survey using ambient environmental parameters (e.g. temperature, salinity, light penetration, cloud cover and wind).
- Conduct point sampling method to survey the reef cover and condition.
- Survey fish diversity using reef fish visual census.
- Conduct random-sampling of socio-economic parameters.
Expected Outcomes
- Reports
- Key findings in the study will be published in IMA International "Marinelife" publications
- The study will gather data and information, both primary and secondary, related to reefs-related use patterns, stakeholders' characteristics and perceptions, gender issues, organization and resource governance, traditional knowledge, market attributes for extractive and non-extractive uses, non-market and non-use values of coral reefs.
- Key findings in survey area will be extrapolated to represent all other sites in Indonesia fit to site selection criteria. Furthermore, it will also contribute to the data needed by Indonesia's Country Status Report on Live Reef Fish and Coral Exploitation and Trade, a joint initiative between IMA Indonesia, the Indonesia's Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries. IMA will submit the study's recommendations to the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries' policy formulation and decision-making process.
