"The Use of GIS in Protected Area Management"

Objective Promote the use of GIS in protected area planning, management and monitoring
Activities Training to be offered in Thailand at Kasetsart University
  1. Draft activity program and budget
  2. Preparatory assessments (institutional set-up; software in use; standard development, course design, preparation of manuals);
  3. Test run of course
  4. Courses delivery
  5. Follow-up visits
Outputs
  1. Standard GIS features (codes and symbols) in ASEAN protected areas.
  2. Course design and materials (in English and language relevant to the ASEAN country) including orientation on biodiversity for Computer Operators
  3. Trained GIS technicians and protected Area Managers
  4. Shared lessons learned (through ARCBC newsletter)
Regional benefits/ Application: A tested and widely applicable course design and manual.
Available standards facilitating information interpretation and sharing· Demonstration of GIS in ASEAN protected areas.
Beneficiary profile: Computer operators and protected area managers (only for PA with GIS facilities) Prior knowledge of the software is assumed.
5-10 participants/country

An ASEAN-wide Training Needs Assessment has recently been completed and proposals have submitted to ARCBC for appraisal.
