The biodiversity and management strategy of endemic
fish species in Lake Towuti, South Sulawesi
Objectives

To determine the diversity of fishes in the lake.

To gather information on the food, feeding habits
and reproductive aspects of endemic fishes in the lake.

To conduct experiments on the breeding and cultivation
of the endemic species in captivity.
Research Theme
Activities
-
Organize and conduct workshop to raise the awareness
of local people and government officers on the values of biodiversity
in Lake Towuti.

Teach the community sustainable ways of using the
lake ecosystems.

Determine species diversity in the lake using
the Shannon Wiener index.
-
Conduct sampling using standard methods in Fishery
Biology.
-
Describe and calculate gonad maturity, fecundity,
sex ratio, sexual dimorphism and spawning season of the fishes.
-
Conduct breeding experiments.
-
Develop management strategies (i.e. close season
catching, permitted mesh size, etc.
Expected Outcomes
-
Ex-situ conservation and other management strategies
to support the sustainable use of the lake Towuti in South Sulawesi.
-
Information disseminated to local communities, government
officers and other stakeholders.
