Identification of coral-reefs biodiversity toward reef conservation of the Krakatau islands in Lampung Province

Objectives

  • To identify the diversity as well as the genetic diversity of coral reefs and macro fauna of the coral reefs surrounding three major islands of the Krakatau islands, namely, Panjang island and Rakata island.
  • To identify the nutrients and physical factors in the area.

Research Theme

  • Ecological Reconstruction

Activities

  • Determine the diversity of the coral reefs by measuring the coral cover, morphology and species diversity.
  • Determine coral morphologies and live coral cover using the standard life-form line intercept transect surveys and Shannon-Weaver diversity.
  • Measure the diversity and density of plankton including the physical factors (dissolved oxygen, pH, salinity and temperature fluctuations).
  • Data analysis of the coral species richness and rare coral species will follow the procedure used by Endinger et al (1999).

Expected Outcomes

  • The baseline information that will result from the project will be useful for scientific researches, ecotourism and even increase public awareness and participation towards the conservation of coral reefs in Krakatau Islands in Lampung Province.

Indicative Budget

  • 49,850 euro

Duration

  • One year

Project site

  • Lampung Province, Indonesia

ARCBC Remarks

  • The project requires some supervision. ARCBC will try to appoint at least one marine biodiversity chair. The study can be linked to efforts at reef reconstruction, in that it is a natural experiment in reef recolonisation.
