Research and conservation of the Hawksbill Turtle in
Indonesia
Objectives
-
To identify the critical habitat of hawksbill turtle
population, a tool for determining a conservation and management policy
and strategy in Indonesia.
-
To assist the ASEAN member countries in developing
a framework for improving technical and institutional approaches through
regional cooperation for managing biodiversity conservation. The five
activities set out below will contribute towards the attainment of
this primary objective:

Activities
The above general objective will be achieved through the
implementation of a programme for:

Developing and improving the Indonesian Marine
Turtle Centre (IMTC) for gathering the data and information from other
institutions, government, NGOs, local people which will focus on the
importance of strengthened biodiversity conservation and management
policies and strategies, particularly for the hawksbill turtles.

Establishing and maintaining an appropriate database
referral system which links national and international institutions
and agencies holding information relevant to biodiversity conservation,
to the ASEAN Regional Centre for Biodiversity Conservation (ARCBC),
database networks, and possibly with the ASEAN web network where appropriate.

Identifying the post migration pattern of hawksbill
turtles by using the radio transmitters (Photo telemetry) for 5 months
monitoring.

Identifying the feeding grounds of post juvenile
and adult female hawksbill turtles.

Mapping of nesting sites of hawksbill turtles
throughout Indonesia.
Expected Outcomes
-
Database (biology, ecology, post nesting migration)
of hawksbill turtles population in Indonesia particularly in the Java
Sea.

Network among the marine turtle specialists in Indonesia
and in ASEAN countries .

Identification of hawksbill turtles' population,
whether local or shared population with neighboring countries.

Guidelines in the management strategy of hawksbill
turtle conservation.

Map of nesting sites distribution.
