Collection, Establishment, Conservation and Documentation of Durio species of Brunei Darussalam and Brunei Bay Region

Objectives

  • To study the phenology of edible durio species in Brunei Darussalam
  • To collect seeds, establish and conserve durio species at Perdayan Arboretum Temburong, and Birau Research Station
  • To document the results of the study in a proposed book Durians of Brunei Bray Region.
  • To recommend agronomic practices for establishment of selected species having commercial potential.
  • To evaluate the feasibility and compatibility of inter-specific grafting using clonal Durio zibethinus as the scion and Bruneian durio species as the disease resistant stocks

  • Survey the distribution of durio species
  • Study the periodic phenomenon of flushes, flowering pollination, fruit set and production.
  • Collection of fruit trees and assessment of its quality
  • Establish seeds in Birau and Perdayan
  • Testing of possible rootstock for D. zibethinus clones.
  • Monitoring of pests and diseases
  • Preparation of reports

ARCBC Remarks

  • It is more interesting to rescue wild durian varieties than assessing the quality of domesticated stocks. This proposal could be linked to UPLB Project and Tenom Agriculture Park in Sabah. The budget needs to be reduced to 80,000 euro.
