Regreening of burned over areas using native species

Objectives

  • To enhance the biodiversity of the UBD Campus;
  • To reduce the incidence and severity of soil erosion and wildfires;
  • To make the campus more aesthetically pleasing and attractive to staff, students and visitors.

Research Theme

  • Ecological Reconstruction

Activities

  • Selection of trees for the arboretum and the adjacent area
  • Site preparation and planting of trees for the arboretum
  • Site preparation and planting of trees for the adjacent area to the arboretum
  • Monitoring of the arboretum planting and rehabilitation work
  • Feasibility work on fire break paths
  • Fruit trees selection and soil preparation for the orchards
  • Establishment of the orchards

Expected Outcomes

  • Biodiversity within the UBD Campus is enhanced, making the place more aesthetically pleasing and attractive to staff, students, and visitors.
  • Established theme areas like the fernarium, palmetum, herbal and medicinal gardens, and arboretum will serve as education, research and teaching tools for our B.Sc. Biology/Environmental Science undergraduate curriculum.
  • Established fire breaks

Indicative Budget

  • 100,000 euro

Duration

  • Two years

Project site

  • University of Brunei Darussalam (UBD) Campus

ARCBC Remarks

  • Should emphasize on rescuing useful wild resources that are rarely domesticated. The project should give emphasis on making it as a model for post-fire restoration programmes across Brunei Darussalam and other countries. Budget is too high.
