The 1st Meeting of the Scientific Experts Committee of the ASEAN Regional Centre for Biodiversity Conservation (ARCBC) was conducted in Los Baños, Laguna, Philippines. The Meeting recommended the following: research selection criteria research priority areas guidelines for research grants
17 September
The 1st Meeting of the Steering Committee of ARCBC held in Bangkok, Thailand approved the following: a. appointment of the ASEAN Co-Director; b. Global Work Plan; c. Initial Plan of Action; d. Annual Work Plan 2000; and e. appointment of members of the SEC.
25 - 27 August
A Biodiversity Training, Education and Awareness Seminar-Workshop was conducted in Los Baños, Laguna, Philippines to assess the status of conservation education in the Philippines.
27 May
ARCBC was officially launched through simple ceremonies with the Secretary of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, Head of the Delegation of European Commission (EC) in Manila, Ambassadors and representatives of ASEAN and EU Embassies in attendance.
22 - 24 April
The 1st Consultative Meeting of National Biodiversity Reference Unit Coordinators and ARCBC was held in Los Baños, Laguna, Philippines. The Initial Plan of Action was adopted and the Logical Framework of the Project was completed during the Meeting.

The EU Technical Assistance Team assumed office, which included Dr. John R. MacKinnon, Team Leader; Mr. Peter C.B. Brown, Programme Administrator and Financial Adviser; Mr. Aloysius J.F.M. Dekker, Database Expert; and Dr. Fritz Heidorn, Training Expert.
16 March
The ASEAN Secretariat replied in a letter to the request for guidance and advice of ARCBC on the participation of Myanmar to the project, stating that the EU funding support for activities of the project would, however apply only to the ASEAN member countries which are signatories to the 1980 ASEAN-EC Agreement as indicated in the Financing Agreement of the project.
25 February
In a letter, ARCBC requested guidance and advice from the ASEAN Secretariat in handling the situation regarding the participation of Myanmar in the implementation of the ASEAN-EU Financing Agreement (ALA/96/22), creating the ARCBC. The request was in consideration of the fact that Myanmar was admitted and became official member of the ASEAN only after the approval of the aforecited Agreement.
23 February
The Technical Assistance Contract was signed by the consortium including the following companies: Societe d' Eco-Amenagement (SECA), Plant Research International (CPRO), Deutsche Gesellschaft für Technische Zusammenarbeit (GTZ) GmbH and The Environment & Development Group (EDG).
