Project Diaries: 1998

October

Mr. Gregorio I. Texon assumed office as ASEAN Co-Director of the ASEAN Regional Centre for Biodiversity Conservation (ARCBC). ARCBC officially started operations.

23-25 September

The 9th Meeting of the ASEAN Senior Officials on the Environment in Singapore approved the recommendation from the ASEAN Working Group on Nature Conservation and Biodiversity (AWGNCB) to follow-up on the financial and technical assistance for the ARCBC project and the convening of the 1st Meeting of the Steering Committee of ARCBC.

01-03 July

At the 8th Meeting of AWGNCB in Singapore, the Meeting took note of a copy of the letter from the European Commission (EC) to the ASEAN Secretariat on the establishment of the National Biodiversity Reference Units (NBRUs) in ASEAN countries. The Meeting agreed that the Philippines will write to all the ASEAN Member Countries not later than 31 July to identify their NBRUs in order to expedite the project implementation.

23 June

Mr. O. Mascagni of the EC informed that because of its financial and administrative procedures the EC considers that the project starts at the date of the signature of the contract between the Commission and the Consortium to which the technical Assistance tender has been awarded. For this reason, in order to maximize the five years' duration of the project, it is very important that the project's foreseen structure (ARCBC + NBRUs) are in place by that date (foreseen by the end of September).

June

Blessing of the ARCBC office was conducted.

March

Construction of the ARCBC office was completed.
